Introduction
Notifications keep you up to date about new messages, replies and updates on your platform. If notifications aren’t behaving as expected — you receive too many, too few, or none at all — the cause is usually in your personal preferences or in your device’s notification settings.
In this article you’ll learn how notifications work, how to enable them on your phone, and what to do when notifications don’t arrive or arrive when you don’t want them.
Start by reviewing your notification preferences inside the platform via Adjust your notification settings. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, follow the steps below for your device.
How notifications work
Whether you receive a notification — and how it reaches you — is determined by three layers of settings, all of which need to align:
- Your platform preferences: in your profile you decide which types of notifications you want to receive (for example new messages, replies or mentions) and through which channel (push, email or both).
- Your device settings: your phone decides whether the Plek app is allowed to display push notifications at all. If this permission is off, you won’t see push notifications regardless of your platform preferences.
- Forced notifications by administrators: group or platform administrators can draw extra attention to an important message by sending a forced notification. In that case your personal preferences are temporarily overridden.
Most issues can be resolved by checking the first two layers.
Enable notifications on iPhone or iPad
The fastest way to grant iOS permission to send notifications is to reinstall the Plek app and accept the permission prompt that appears.
Did you tap Don’t Allow the first time you installed the app? Reinstalling is then the only way to restore notification permission. Enabling notifications through the iOS Settings menu will have no effect in that case.
- Remove the Plek app from your iPhone or iPad.
- Reinstall the Plek app from the App Store.
- Open the app and log in with your email address and password.
-
When iOS asks whether the app may send notifications, tap Allow.
- Your device is now ready to receive notifications from Plek.
Enable notifications on Android
On Android devices the menu structure can vary by manufacturer and version. The example below is based on Android 11. If your menu looks different, use the search bar in Settings.
- Open Settings on your phone.
- Tap Notifications.
- Choose Manage notifications.
- Select Plek from the list of apps.
- Turn on Allow notifications.
Does your menu look different? Use the search bar in the Settings menu and search for terms such as Notifications, Apps, App management or App list. Then locate the Plek app within those settings and allow notifications.
Troubleshooting
I don’t receive any push notifications
- Check that the notification preferences in your platform profile are configured correctly.
- Check that the Plek app on your device has permission to send notifications (see the steps above).
- On iOS: did you choose Don’t Allow the first time you installed the app? Remove the app and reinstall it.
- Check that your phone isn’t in Do Not Disturb or focus mode.
I disabled notifications but still receive them
In some cases group or platform administrators can send a forced notification to draw extra attention to an important message. With a forced notification your personal preferences are temporarily overridden and you’ll still receive a push and/or email notification. This only happens for messages specifically flagged by an administrator.
I receive too many notifications
- Adjust your platform preferences and pick which notifications you want per group or message type.
- Choose whether to receive notifications via push, email or both.
- Mute notifications for specific groups or channels you no longer want updates from.
The problem persists
