Introduction
With the Menu module you determine what your platform's navigation looks like — both the menu on desktop and the navigation in the mobile app. You can reorder items, enable or disable them, rename them, add custom links and set page headers with a description.
In this article you will read how to adjust the desktop menu and the mobile navigation, and what to watch out for when saving.
For this module you need administrator rights. You manage it via the browser on desktop; the admin panel is not available in the BCS Connect app. The changes you make here are visible in the app — the Mobile tab is precisely where you manage the app navigation.
How does the Menu module work?
You will find the module via the admin panel: click Modules in the menu and select Menu from the list. The module has two tabs:
- Desktop: the main menu that users see in the browser. Here you reorder items, switch parts on or off and add custom links.
- Mobile: the navigation in the BCS Connect app — the bottom bar and the More menu.
Changes are only applied when you click Save at the bottom of the page. With Cancel you revert everything to the last saved situation.
Adjusting the desktop menu
The Desktop tab shows all menu items with their Name, System name and Path. You can recognise custom links by the Custom label.
Reordering items and switching them on or off
- Drag an item in the list to change the order in the menu.
- Use the Show in menu toggle to hide or show an item. Disabled items continue to exist, but are hidden in the navigation.
- Click Save at the bottom.
Editing a menu item
- Click the edit icon behind an item.
- If required, adjust the Title.
- Under Display, set whether the item is shown as an icon (Show as icon). Items that do not fit in the bar and end up in the drop-down menu always show their title.
- Do you want to show a header with an explanation at the top of this section's page? Then switch on the Show page header option under Page header and fill in the Header title and Description.
- Click Save in the window and then at the bottom of the page.
The default name of a menu item is translated automatically for every language on your platform. If you give the item a name of your own, everyone sees the same text in all languages. Via Restore default name you return to the automatically translated name.
Adding a custom link
- Click Add menu item.
- Fill in the Title, for example Intranet archive.
- Fill in the URL: an external address (https://example.com) or a path within the platform (/path/in/plek).
- Switch on Open in new tab if the link should open outside the platform.
- Click Save in the window and then at the bottom of the page.
Adjusting the mobile app navigation
The Mobile tab consists of two parts:
Bottom bar
The app's bottom navigation bar has five positions. Home, Messages and More are fixed; you determine positions 2 and 4 yourself.
- For each position, choose the section you want, for example People, Pages, Calendar, Channels or Groups.
- If required, adjust the Title and the Icon. With Clear you reset a position back to the default.
More menu
These are the items users see when they tap More in the app.
- Drag items to change the order.
- Use the Active toggle to show or hide items.
- Click Add menu item to add an extra item; choose the type, fill in the Title (required) and choose an Icon.
- Click Save at the bottom. Users will see the new navigation once the app has reloaded the settings (for example after reopening the app).
Troubleshooting
I cannot save
- Check that every mobile menu item has a title — without a title the Save button is disabled with the message Every mobile menu item needs a title.
- For a custom link, check that the URL is valid and that no other menu item already points to the same URL.
My change is not visible to users
- Check that you clicked Save at the bottom of the page.
- In the app: close the app completely and open it again, so that the new navigation is loaded.
A menu item has disappeared
- Check that the Show in menu (desktop) or Active (mobile) toggle has not been switched off by accident — the item is then still in the list, but hidden.
I don't see the Menu module
- Check whether you have administrator rights.
- The self-service management modules may not be enabled for your environment.
